Sunwapta Falls is located just south of Jasper, Alberta in the Canadian Rockies. Located at the end (or start) of the icefields parkway, it’s beauty is a fitting tribute to the surrounding landscape. The waterfalls are fed by the meltwater from the Athabasca Glacier. The limestone rocks have been carved by the falling water to a height of about 75 feet. It’s definitely worth a quick stop during your stay in Jasper National Park.
I captured this image in September during a hiking trip through the area. Mount Assiniboine was the main reason for my trip, but this area was worth the drive. In fact, the Icefields Parkway is one of the most scenic drives on earth.
Sunwapta Falls actually consists of 2 different waterfalls. Having visited both, the upper falls are definitely my favorite. I love the grove of trees that split the river and wanted to show that in this image. Long exposures make for smooth looking water. This is a technique I often use, but bright daytime makes it more of a challenge. Thankfully I always have a set of ND (neutral Density) filters with me so that I can get the perfect look for a waterfall. If you have the opportunity, definitely give Sunwapta Falls a go!
