I found this amazing arch at the Mendenhall glacier. Having visited this area so many times before, I’m always on the hunt for unique angles to capture my fine art images. One of my favorite features during the winters in Alaska has to be the ice. It’s amazing how different the landscape appears when the temperatures drop below freezing.
This particular arch wasn’t all that big. I was surprised by how many people bypassed it and never gave it a second look. I ended up taking images at sunrise, sunset and during the night. This was definitely my favorite. I hiked the west glacier trail to the face of the Mendenhall since the lake wasn’t quite thick enough to walk across. I tend to be a bit on the cautious side when it comes to frozen lakes. My aversion to getting wet is well known with people that know me.
It was supposed to be a clear night and I knew the stars would be out in all their glory. As a result, I was willing to brave the cold temperatures to capture the perfect image. I crawled under the arch and laid in the dirt for over 3 hours as I enjoyed the moment in the balmy 5 degree weather 🙂
