I spent the day hiking in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Near the border with North Carolina is Clingmans Dome. At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The observation tower on the summit of Clingmans Dome offers spectacular 360° views of the Smokies and beyond for visitors willing to climb the steep half-mile walk to the tower at the top.
I walked up to the observation tower quite early for the sunset due to the busy season and it was a rare clear day. The clouds were on fire as the sunset happened. Often times the viewing distance is less than 20 miles due to pollution. Beyond worth it when it’s clear!
