Hawaii brings to mind palm trees and sandy beaches for many. This sunrise image is from the island of Hawai’i. It is the largest and the southeasternmost of the Hawaiian Islands, a chain of volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. With an area of 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2), it has 63% of the Hawaiian archipelago’s combined landmass, and is the largest island in the United States. However, it has only 13% of Hawaiʻi’s people. This relative lack of population is one of the reasons my wife and I like this island better than Oahu. We ended up spending a couple weeks exploring just a smidgen of the available options.
I came to this location multiple times looking for the right combination of clouds and surf (and palm trees). There are so many fantastic locations on Hawaiʻi to photograph the surf. This was one of the more readily accessible ones to the house we had rented. This morning will always stay with me since I got hit by a wave right after I took this image and fried my camera. Thus I spent the remainder of the trip seeing amazing sights and not taking pictures. Sometimes it’s just good to go exploring.
