The Moeraki Boulders are a mysterious sight. These spherical stones are scattered across Koekohe beach. The remnants of a magical time in history that we have forgotten. You can’t drive along the North Otago coast without stopping to stare at this famous location. According to Maori legend, the boulders are gourds washed ashore from the great voyaging canoe Araiteuru when it was wrecked upon landfall in New Zealand hundreds of years ago.
New Zealand is known for many unique features. I’ve had the opportunity to visit this beautiful country on many occasions and it’s hard to say which area is my favorite. My wife and I have driven from the tip of the north island to the tip of the south. Having awesome locations to explore like the Moeraki Boulders makes the drive worth it.
We arrived in the area late at night during one of our trips. The first time I visited I had no idea where to go, but I knew I wanted a sunrise picture. As a result, I arrived extra early to wander around on the beach to find what I was looking for. Thankfully, it’s not a long walk on Koekohe beach from the car park. Little did I know just how amazing and on fire the sky would become.
